It’s basically no surprise: Roger Federer will not take part in the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. This is revealed by a look at the entry lists published by the All England Club on Friday evening.

Federer does not appear in this.

The world ranking list from May 16, 2022 (six weeks before the start of the tournament) was used as a basis for the ranking of participants, according to which Federer would have qualified as number 46.

After losing Wimbledon last year in the quarterfinals against Hubert Hurkacz, Federer had to have another operation on his right knee. The Swiss had already had two surgeries here in 2020, and the comeback in 2021 was initially sluggish; apparently Federer had injured himself again while preparing for the lawn.

At the end of last year, Federer considered a comeback at Wimbledon 2022 unlikely, “I would be surprised if I played Wimbledon again,” he said here . Now it seems certain that this will not happen (a wildcard left out).

Federer’s comeback at the Laver Cup towards the end of August is more likely.Wimbledon: Thiem still on the list

In addition to the Russian and Belarusian players ( who will be absent due to the Wimbledon decision ) Stan Wawrinka is also not listed; he could have participated via a “protected ranking”. In contrast to Federer, Wawrinka is registered for grass events in the run-up to Wimbledon, so wildcard participation is not excluded.

Somewhat surprising: Dominic Thiem is still registered (via his “Protected Ranking”), but he is not planning the lawn in 2022 .

Wimbledon: Men’s entry listWimbledon 2022: The Williams sisters are also missing

One name in particular is missing from the women: that of Serena Williams. She played her last tour match in Wimbledon last year and has been injured since then, apparently there will not be a comeback on the holy lawn in 2022. The same goes for Sister Venus Williams.
